After a few years-long hiatus, the Gramatan Hills Homeowner’s Association (GHHA) is back! About 30 residents gathered in the Flynn room of the Grinton I. Will Library on Monday February 27 at 6pm to kick-off what we hope is a great year of re-building. Maureen Corbett organized and led the two hour long meeting that hosted both local police and city council members.
Maureen introduced the group of veterans and newbies to the history of the organization. The decades-old HOA was founded by Ann Vizzini, but has had many other leaders and members throughout its existence. And over that time numerous events and gatherings have been put on by our engaged neighbors. We also use this association to define and enforce many quality-of-life and property value standards that makes us the best hidden gem in the City of Yonkers.
Captain Andrew McLaughlin of the Yonkers Police Department followed with a summary of recent public safety news. As the head of the 2nd precinct, he cited the most common issues in our area. Property crimes pertaining to automobiles topped the list. Car break-ins, catalytic converter thefts, and outright thefts of entire vehicles should be our biggest concern. The best and easiest way to prevent most of this crime is to be sure to lock your doors and park in well-lit areas.
Both City Council Members Breen and Merante joined us in this meeting. After the recent redistricting process, our neighborhood has transferred from Merante’s 6th district to Breen’s 5th district. Both representatives spoke on the importance of local zoning laws in single-family neighborhoods. They also took questions regarding recent projects like the Ludlow park development and storage facility construction on Central Ave.
Concluding the meeting was a call to action by Maureen. As a newly reconstituted association, we must elect new board members and trustees. In doing so, we will revisit our bylaws, fee schedule, and meeting cadence. Once an updated list of neighbors is compiled, notifications on next steps will be delivered both in print and electronically via e-mail.
Thanks for all who attended!
